What is a Book of Shadows?
Book of Shadows…a phrase that conjures up (pardon the magical pun) images of something dark and creepy for some. Others think of something sparkly and magical. Even others, I fall into this camp, think of it as a reference journal or history book – a witchy encyclopedia if you will (witchy Wikipedia if you’re of the younger crowd).
One of the magical things (I can’t stop myself) about a Book (let’s just call it a Book to save keystrokes please) is that it can be anything you want it to be. Like Wicca you are free to choose your path. The format, content and everything else is all up to you.
In this series, I’m going to touch on Book design, different names for your Book, and awesome things you can put in your Book.
For now, let’s just go over some alternative names and styles and what you need to get started.
Any of these names would work or, even better, come up with your own. Check out The Curious Violet for more ideas. I’d love to know if you have a special name for your Book? Let me know in the comments.
What should I use to make my Book?
There are tons of opinions. Some say you should only use a hard cover bound book. I have to disagree. Although I love hard bound books (I can’t make a trip to Barnes and Noble without drooling over the beautiful options), I prefer something that allows me to move the pages around or add and remove pages on a whim. Hard bound books can be Ex-Pen-Sive and if you’re just starting out you may not have the cashola to spend on something like that. You can use a spiral notebook from the dollar store. There’s no law that says you can’t move into something else later. Re-writing things into a new Book can be a lovely trip down memory lane.
Anyway, pick what works right for you. I’d love to hear if you’re using something different.
Any of these styles have pros and cons. It’s up to you to find what works best for you.
Since a Book of Shadows can include SO much information this is going to be an on-going series. Look for new stuff at least once a month just on Books. Look for other posts on things like runes and tarot and boatloads of other stuff.
